After more than a hundred years of mistreatment and disrespect, the Aboriginal people are owed almost more than an apology for the actions done against their ancestors. From the beginning of the colonization of Australia, the British invaded the Aboriginal owned land and took over anything they could. They started pushing the Aboriginals outwards into more inner parts of Australia, and pushed them into areas with less water and food. They didn't respect the Aboriginal people's land rights, they just came into Australia and started controlling everything. Some of the British people even killed Aboriginal people for no reason, as if they were animals. At the start the Aboriginal people never did any bad harm towards the settlers, on the contrary, they were friendly to them. Why would you do such bad things towards people who from the very start were kind to you? The English were ethnocentric people and only believed their race was the best way to live. Only because they seemed more sophisticated and advanced. Just because a group of people don't seem "advanced" it doesn't make their way of living wrong. The English even went to such lengths to kidnap the Aboriginal people's children, and take them to a camp where they would learn to live a more of English lifestyle. If any of the children ever attempted escaping the camp, once found they would be punished in some way and put in solitary confinement. They treated all the Aboriginal people like animals and took advantage of them. Ever since the English people arrived in Australia, the Aboriginals were only looking for a peace and the ability to live together with their separate cultures. Without even asking, the Englishmen went over to Australia and started taking up their land. Although much of the harm has already been done, an apology to the Aboriginals would be a thoughtful action. They didn't benefit anything from the colonization of Australia. Over more than half of their population decreased and slowly they started loosing their culture. An apology won't recuperate their lost ancestors and cultures, but its the least anyone can do to take back the horrible things their people have been through. As an individual you may want to support the Aboriginal culture by visiting an Aboriginal tourist area. This way you can learn more about their culture and make sure it doesn't slowly disappear. For over two centuries the Aboriginal people went through horrible conditions because of the settlers, they deserve an apology since they turned out the victims of the colonization of Australia.
Your blogpost and views on how the Australians owe an apology to the natives are valid. Also, you should give evidence, like how they would take their children away, to make half-caste children. There are some grammatical errors in the paragraph, like when you said, "Without even asking the Englishmen...". There should be a comma after 'without even asking, ...'.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I think that the ethnocentricity of the British led them to believe that they were better, and they started treating the Aboriginals badly. The British had no right to take the children away from their families. I really think that they owe the Aboriginals an apology.
